A People of Faith, A Suffering Humanity
This is just a sequel of my last reflection as it continuously appears in my mind.
We had a big gathering in the outstation today, though I just called a few of the caregivers to come for lessons and sharing on the table. I promised them a goat and some traditional drink (which they had to prepare themselves). To my surprise, they were almost three hundred people coming, newly recruit caregivers in the villages and HIV/AIDS clients, young mothers and husbands. It was really amazing!
I was so lucky because the health officer from the clinic came, an she was really a great help, especially on medical terms, and being well versed in Chinyanja, people understood her well. Another lucky thing is that I had the power points ready, given to me by Dr. Ang, a Filipino doctor from the Mwami Adventist Hospital. Everything prepared, from Nutrition to all types of diseases and illnesses.
There was astonishing reaction from people, they were so happy and they expressed their joy openly. Some questions were delicate and personal, but they were open to express their feelings. I can see by now changes in their behaviours, their approach towards illnesses. Many of them who came were sickly people, and I supposed many were HIV/AIDS positive.
Being in front, I had more chances of seeing their faces, and sometimes, by instinct, reading traces of their faces. Really they are people of faith but also a suffering humanity. Many are still young but they look already old and haggard. It seems that stress and pressure for survival is devouring their “youthfulness”. Many of them are getting old, living in real poverty, not even experiencing comforts in life. Every day is an activity for survival and hard work.
These two weeks has been so very busy for me because aside from seminars and teachings that I am doing with caregivers, I also have more than 50 students who are doing some piece works in the mission for school fees. I have to be with them always, organize the works, colleting firewood, cleaning the surrounding, slashing and others. Manual works is dear to me, but often, the heat of the sun makes me so exhausted at the end of the day.
My joy is that I see them working very hard to get a bit of money for school; especially many of them are in high school by now, single and double orphans. I dream for these youth for a better education. This is the only way to get out from poverty; that is why I also sacrifice so much of my time for them. They are the future of the parish, of the country and of the world.
Again, what I am doing is very little. The help doesn’t count much, but the joy inside and the dream itself for the young ones. It is not easy for them. I am hard on them at times, but I want them to value money, that it is not easy to get money. They have to work hard, to sweat out, so that they will value their studies- “Education through hard work.”
In the other parts of the world, young people don’t value their parents’ money because they live in abundance. Many students abuse their education and destroy their future. They indulge into drugs and alcohol. But at times, it is also the fault of their parents. They think that love can be substituted by monetary value. “Even if you have millions, but you don’t have time for the family and children, you are always a failure.” I always remind people on this.
On the other side, there is real poverty. There is real longing for education, but they don’t have the means because parents are so poor, parents die of sickness, parents are separated because of traditional practices, and most of these children are left in the hands of their old and sickly grandparents. The fruits of failed marriages, early pregnancies and polygamists are suffering, so they have to work hard, sweat out, skip meals, and be away for weeks to labour for money! What an irony! If only there is real sharing, many of them would have been educated long time ago.
Anyway, life is moving. We are all moving, sacrificing joyfully for others. Christmas is fast approaching. We are just having simple things, no glittering Christmas decors or Santa Claus' socks for sweets, or exchanging gifts, or fancy dinner etc. We live here according to what we can afford, in simplicity of our lifestyle. But we remain happy and joyful missionaries in the heart of Africa.
Merry Christmas to you. Know that you are always in my prayers.

A Much Simple Christmas
December 24th, 2010
Peace and God bless,
I would like to ask apology for my long silence, especially in this season of Christmas. My months, especially this last five months has been so very busy, doing all my ministries in places which are unreachable by rainy season.
Now is rainy season, flood time everywhere. In fact, since yesterday, we are already stranded here in the mission, as they tried to excavate also the bridges for repair. Our Christmas celebrations are hampered, which for me, is quite frustrating!!! What could we do?????
Christmas, as I have written in the past, is very much simple here, no glittering around or Christmas decorations, except my little crib in the church made of a real tree, decorated with flowers and crepe papers, then an old painting of the nativity. Inside the house, i have a little crib, with newspapers balls sprayed in gold and Christmas cards and presents.
All the same, I feel that Christmas is also very much celebrated in the heart. We have some group of reconciliation, baptism and Eucharist for tonight. I cannot go and do the celebration in my zone as we are stranded here. We will do our simple Christmas celebration as meaningful as possible.
I was hearing confessions, and I feel that in many ways, the coming of the Lord is at the same time a preparation in the heart and spirit. I am so thankful to the Lord for this serenity in my heart, the inner peace and joy and my real happiness in the mission. God is really good and I am so grateful for all these inner feelings.
I accompany you in my prayers and assure you of my presence no matter how far I am. Please continue to pray for my mission and for me.
Merry Christmas and a blessed New Year.

Bearers of Christ
“A plan was revealed to Mary, and immediately, she went out to serve.” This is not quoted in the Bible, but I want to translate it in this way. She moved, she was feeling something mysterious and miraculous. She did not waste time. She became a missionary herself. She left immediately!
What a beautiful image! I have to do the same. We missionaries have to do the same- ready to move because something mysterious and miraculous is happening among our brothers and sisters. Zambia, Malawi and other mission areas in the world, we have to move, be ready when our service is needed.
The encounter of the two women is always an icon for me. Mary, the young girl, Elizabeth, old and barren, called to become mothers, called to be instruments in the plan of salvation. Mary was young and vulnerable, Elizabeth was old and vulnerable, yet in their vulnerabilities, the Lord called them to become His instruments.
There was also the encounter of Jesus and John. In Mary’s greetings, something was provoked inside. John leapt for joy! Elizabeth recognized the role of Mary: “Why should I be honored by the visit of the mother of my Lord?”
We are honored! Mary facilitated of the presence of the Lord. She facilitated our journey to become followers of Jesus, her Son. She facilitated that Christ be born and be closer to people.
This is my vocation too- To bring Christ, to preach Christ and His works, to administer the Sacraments so that people will receive Christ. In our work of facilitation, we make people touch Christ. We become bearers of Jesus Christ. “It is no longer I, but Christ lives in me."
We need that strong faith in the Son of Mary, the Son of God. I owe Jesus my life because of His choice for me. I have His heart, He has mine. I become a contagious presence of Christ to people in my speech. I need that faith: “Be filled with everything that is true, admirable and good.”

Lady of the Whole World
When I was a first year novice, December 31, 1988, waiting for New Year, I sat silently in front of the Belen reflecting the Nativity. While looking deeply the image of the Lady and the Infant Jesus, I had a dialogue in my heart and a prayer was formed. I wrote it in the middle of the night, before our Midnight Mass. This prayer I want to share with you as my Christmas message.
PRAYER TO THE LADY OF THE WHOLE WORLD
Mary, my Mother of Faith
I am so amazed by your faith in me
You caught me by surprise because of your generosity
Why are you giving your Son to someone?
Why to me? My heart is so wicked and wretched.
I don't feel worthy for such a favour
Many times I feel so little because of this responsibility
Mother, you can see only trash in my heart
Once you told me to carve a channel in my heart
That I may let Jesus pass through it
I ask your strength, help me to clean my heart.
And now you have blessed me Mother
You have cleansed my soul
How I wish I would no longer be thinking of sin
That day after day, I would be worthy to embrace Jesus
And press Him into my heart.
The joy that I am feeling Mother is unsurpassable
Help me to be the brother that you want me to be,
That Jesus may grow in my care.
Help me to make Him one with me
To wrap me with His mystery
So that I would also share Him into the hearts of people.
Mother of the Whole World
Thanks for the intimacy that I have experienced with Jesus
Help me to be generous
Feeding the sweetness of the Child for the hungry.
Give me the grace to see clearly excellent practice
Of patience and humility.
You know Mother how small my heart is
So tiny even to embrace a person.
Thank you for the rooms of love, understanding,
Service, humility and peace
I can put Jesus now at any corners of my heart
Through people I meet along the way.
I am so homesick to see you dear Mother
But time has not come yet
For you want me to receive images of the Infant Jesus in my apostolate
Prepare me for that great day
Where I would be in intimacy with you.
In times of persecution
Lend me your actions…
"To keep all things in my heart
And to accept Jesus with all my love." Amen.
